Weather Turning, no faux king way, dinner

From yard work and soup night to a mushroom dinner, a basement drain surprise, and helping Tom recover — it’s been a full week! Wrapped up with friends at Flint Creek and looking ahead to the Grand Prix Regatta.

Hey everyone,

I hope you’re all doing well! Things are good here. The week started out absolutely stunningly beautiful, and I took advantage of the weather to get some work done in the yard to prepare for fall. I also managed to wash and wax the van — it’s looking pretty sharp now. :)

Tuesday night we had soup night, and I ducked out a bit early to host the OMCC Board meeting.

Tom, the owner of Corvo, fell at home that same evening and has been in the hospital ever since. He’s expected to be discharged today. Catherine, Kat, Scott, and I have been spending time up there helping him and Helen navigate the system. Diane has been a godsend as well, helping us find our way through the process.

Thursday night we headed over to Yves’s house for dinner. Over the past couple of years, he’s become quite the forager, and we had a wonderful meal centered around wild mushrooms.

On Saturday, Catherine and I hopped on our bikes and rode down to downtown Ballard to join the No Kings protest, which was peaceful and uplifting. I think I saw only two professionally printed signs — all the rest were handmade, and some were really creative. Catherine came up with a phrase we’ll use on a sign next time: “Fighting Fascism for Free,” or 4F.

After the rally, we headed home to finish preparing dinner for our guests (and of course, the dishes featured the mushrooms Yves sent us home with the night before!). One wrinkle in the evening: our last shower of the day backed up through the basement floor drain. Thankfully, the water alarm went off, so we caught it early and kept the mess to a minimum. Dinner was still a success — plenty of good food and conversation.

Sunday morning, we went over to the Crown Hill Center to borrow their big power snake. I ran it through both cleanouts for the sewer, but no luck. So, this week’s project is finding a plumber to give us estimates on a real fix for the side sewer. (We’ve been living on borrowed time since we know there are roots and cracks in there.)

Sunday night, Chris and Emi took us to dinner at Flint Creek Cattle Company — one of our favorite spots — as a thank-you for watching their dog, Jazz, while they were on holiday. We managed to stay blissfully unaware of the Mariners game score so we could enjoy watching it when we got home.

This coming weekend is the Seattle Yacht Club’s Grand Prix Regatta — the last big event of the 2025 season! I’ve got a few things I want to get ready before then. :)

Love you all,

Dan W
